The founder members of Vyners School are of the opinion that that a school is made up of its population and not its buildings.
It was in September 1958 that the first pupils were allocated to the new school that was under construction in Ickenham. As a temporary measure, this first tranche of pupils was spread around other, not so local, schools: Elliotts Green; St Marys; St Nicholas.
While at these temporary billets, we were supervised by the local teaching staff. In 1959, the second year of the school's history, the 1X boys were moved from St Nick's to join the girls in St Mary's along with the 2nd year pupils and members of the embryonic staff.
It wasn't until January 1960 that the founder pupils all met under one roof in Ickenham.
The main reason for starting Vyners Old Scholars was to be in touch with former pupils and staff so that we were well placed when the school wanted to hold another major anniversary celebration.
It now transpires that the school may have intentions to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the school opening but not until 2009.
It's with this travesty in mind that we are planning the 2008 Annual Lunch as being the unofficial 50th anniversary celebration if for no other reason than that we can count!
On the last Friday of most months (except Dec & Jan), we continue to meet at the Green Man; a very suitable location. There is space enough for our small band of stalwarts and the food (if required) is reasonable in both price and quality. It has been heart-warming to remake the acquaintance of old friends over the years. It's very informal: drop in for the first or last hour or make an evening of it.
The next one is Friday, 24th, October, 2008.
